Introducing Our "Edgewood Experience"

We recently conducted a Communication survey with our parents, staff, middle school and high school students. We appreciated everyone who took the survey and received a lot of great feedback. One of the requests we heard from the survey was the need to share more information about our student's activities, accomplishments, and initiatives. In response to this request, we’ve created our “Edgewood Experience”. We’ll be sharing short videos throughout the spring season, from each of our schools, so you can see what’s going on at Edgewood. We’re excited to share our first video with you. It’s from our Seven Mile Elementary School. Our Seven Mile students and staff have been focused on making a positive change by following the “3 B’s” Here’s our first fun, short video that highlights what the “3 B’s are all about!

Students Performed at the OMEA Honor Band Concert

Congratulations to the EMS Band members who performed in the District 13 Honor Band concert on Sunday, January 20, at Mason High School. The students who were selected for this honor had auditioned in early December. They were selected based on their musicianship and performance. All students, who were selected for this year's Honor Band from schools within the southwestern Ohio area, came together for two days of rehearsal. The result was an outstanding concert performance that will be remembered by all who were in attendance. Great job to each of the following Edgewood musicians who were selected to be a member of this prestigious band!

What an Amazing Mural!

Our new mural located in the stairwell at EMS is nearly complete! The goal of this mural is to instill positive values within our students as well as to brighten up our hallways. The mural reads: "Some kids are smarter than you. Some kids have cooler clothes than you. Some kids are better at sports than you, IT DOESN'T MATTER!" You have your thing too. Be the kid who can get along. Be the kid who is generous. Be the kid who is happy for other people. Be the kid who does the right thing. BE THE NICE KID!"

Results of the Food Drive for the EMA Food Pantry in Trenton

It was a terrific effort by the students & staff. 3,166 canned food items were donated for the EMA Food Pantry! Everyone was so excited to see the school bus fill up with food over the 2 week food drive. Congratulations to the “Bears” House who won the contest by collecting 1,053 items! While the other three Houses made a significant contribution to the food drive (Wolves donated 824 items, Foxes collected 700 items, and the Owls brought in 589 items), their House Leaders had to kiss a pig for not achieving the greatest number of items donated. Even Principal Slamer showed his support & kissed a pig! It was a lot of fun for a great cause! Thanks to everyone who donated to this great fundraiser for our community. All the food donations were taken to the EMA Food Pantry on December 17 in time for the holidays.

Mrs. Brown Presents at OMLA & Conducts 1st Music Fest

Mrs. Alaura Brown, Edgewood Middle School math teacher, spoke at the Ohio Middle Level Association Conference in Sandusky, Ohio in October that over 900 teachers attended. She was one of 100 speakers at this year’s event. Mrs. Brown spoke on Gamification, which is a new area in education. Her presentation focused on how to incorporate interactive, high interest gamification elements such as leader boards and badges into the classroom. This new approach in education incorporates game elements into a non-game setting. It leads to elevated engagement and increased motivation in nearly all students. Mrs. Brown was also responsible for hosting Edgewood’s first Music Fest on November 16. This event focused on investigating the relationship and history between mathematics and music. Over 50 student-musicians from Edgewood Middle School and Edgewood High School attended the interactive event.

These students were then able to share this information with the entire 7th Grade in an assembly later in the day. Special thanks to the KNOW Theatre for this great advice and for providing Character Traits wristbands!

EMS on Brief Lockdown This Morning (October 18)

As a precautionary measure, our Edgewood Middle School was placed on a brief lockdown this morning when a student created an outburst in one of the halls, prior to class change. The lockdown lasted approximately 7 minutes. The situation was quickly resolved by the Administrators at EMS. No weapons were involved, all students were safe during the lockdown and classes have resumed as normal. As a reminder, when a school is on lockdown, students are restricted to their classroom and are not released from the classroom until lockdown has concluded. No one is permitted into the school during a lockdown.
