8th grade STEM students visited Yaskawa America, MotoMan Division, in Miamisburg. Motoman designs and manufactures robotic arms for use in manufacturing. Motoman plans and designs their robots on their 3-D CAD system--similar to the system students learned in STEM 7 - Design and Modeling. In addition, they manufacture, program and train customers on site. Students saw the application for much of what they learned in STEM 7 and STEM 8. Students saw wireless robots which could remove their own discharged battery, put it on a charger while installing another fully charged battery. They watched robots interact with each other and interact with humans. Students were able to easily program a robot by just moving the end effector to desired locations. The robots performed many tasks like packaging product, orienting and welding parts, and making a pile of assemblies into an orderly stack. Students have a better appreciation of what it takes to design and build robots. Everyone was excited by what they saw and were fascinated by possibilities that robots offer.
